Some Fun Things to Celebrate in May

on April 30, 2014

April was a rough time for me – started out hard and ended that way too. But now May is nearly upon us and there are some crazy wonderful foods to celebrate this month:  the strawberry, chocolate chip cookie, and THE HAMBURGER.  I loooooooove hamburgers.  Can’t cook one to save my life, but maybe that’s how it should be (I secretly believe that men should cook hamburgers; is that sexist?  Maybe , but I’m kind of sexist, so that sort of works for me).

Anyway, the following observances should make for a good month.  You can get the complete list over at The Nibble, as I’ve just listed those of particular interest to me.

  • National Asparagus Month
  • National Barbeque Month
  • National Hamburger Month (Le Joy)
  • National Salsa Month
  • National Strawberry Month
  • May 1: National Chocolate Parfait Day
  • May 2: National Truffles Day
  • May 6: International No Diet Day
  • May 10: National Shrimp Day
  • May 11: Eat What You Want Day
  • May 13 National Apple Pie Day
  • May 14: National Buttermilk Biscuit Day
  • May 15: National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
  • May 17: National Cherry Cobbler Day
  • May 18: National Cheese Soufflé Day
  • May 19: National Devil’s Food Cake Day
  • May 19: World Baking Day
  • May 20: Pick Strawberries Day
  • May 21: National Strawberries and Cream Day
  • May 26: National Cherry Dessert Day
  • May 28: National Hamburger Day
  • May 30: National Macaroon Day

So there you go – all sorts of yummy goodness to carry you through the month!
Bon Appétit

A glimpse of life at Chez Mama Bear.

In the absence of girl bears, food is a good thing.

At the risk of taking Fuzzie’s role here:

Fuzzie, don’t worry, that’s just a guy dressed up in a bear suit.

And I guess I’m a sexist, too, because there is just something delightful about the danger of cooking with live fire, after of course fighting a Kodiak brownie for the salmon. :^)

    • FuzzieWuzzie says:

      Bike Bubba,
HE STOLE THE BEAR’S SALMON! And then, he beat the bear up!
      BAD HUMAN!!!

      • Maeve says:

As the Grinch would exclaim: “THE INHUMANITY!” (from the movie, not the book, of course)

      • Bike Bubba says:

Oh, how are we going to make sure the bears toughen up so they can survive in this world? Can you think of any better way than by sending crazy Brits out to fight them for fish? :^)

See, it was a mission of mercy.

      (Loved this!)

I agree! It really is a guy thing – can you can tell just by watching guys cook over fire – they’re in their element – why mess with that?.

I love that you post these. They help with ideas for menu planning. Thanks!

The Grill is the domain of Man. This is the Law: so it is written, so must it be done.

      LOL TSK ..

True Story here – last year I bought a charcoal grill as the H took the propane (which was fine; I was tired of nearly incinerating myself). Anyhoo… so I get what I think are natural charcoal chips and load up the chimney with them (the lighter fluid makes me sick so use newspaper and chimney to start coals) and start the thing up. Unfortunately for me, these were not actually charcoal, but wood chips which you add to the charcoal for smoking or something. Not a good outcome. Haven’t worked up the nerve to approach the grill again.

DH seems to think I should use the smoker… but he then tells me exactly how he wants things done, so that’s probably okay. Right? 😉
